At Dimension.uh, we believe in going out there to experience, explore and experiment. What happens then when things don’t seem to go our way? Well, we dive into the land of storytelling. Experiencing the depths of the outside world, all while staying cosy indoors (or in-duh-oors, as we like to put it).

Here, we share our list of adventure reads that took! our! breaths! away! So grab a cuppa fresh coffee and let’s get out there (or in your heads) my wavy people!

ANOTHER ESCAPE

WHY READ IT?
The Water Volume (Volume 12) captivated us with a collection of stories and interviews of people so deeply connected to our oceans. Seaweed harvesters, surfboard shapers, water keepers, pyrography artists, fly fishermen, and more. What spurred them on? Why are they living the way they do? Have a look into their journeys, and explore the world with them.

Other volumes capture the beauty and gravity of nature. We are deeply appreciative of how Another Escape champions the outdoor lifestyle, and encourages people to interact with nature on a deeper level.

BUILDING A PURPOSE-FIRST business
LET MY PEOPLE GO SURFING
by YVON CHOUINARD

Photo: Patagonia

Photo: Patagonia

WHY READ IT?
A man that zigged, when everyone zagged. Delve into the mind of Yvon Chouinard - how he built Patagonia from the ground up, his commitment towards quality, functionality, design and durability (especially since he was first and foremost, a climber, surfer and athlete) and environmental activism (you might be familiar with 1% for the planet).

Coupled with his unique take on employee culture aka “let my people go surfing” aka “catch a good swell, go bouldering for an afternoon, pursue an education, or get home in time to greet the kids when they come down from the school bus”.

ADVENTURE TIME!
SWELL: A SAILING SURFER’S VOYAGE OF AWAKENING
BY CAPTAIN LIZ CLARK

WHY READ IT?
Swell was THE book that inspired us to pick up sailing. Captain Liz Clark’s voyage across the high seas, her struggle towards getting there in the first place (can you even imagine how much effort it takes to fix and maintain a boat?), AND THEN sailing SOLO (in stormy weather much less), is nothing short of jaw-dropping.

We imagine ourselves in her shoes (or lack there of!) - surfing the empty line-ups she encounters, or adopting the sea-cat she chances upon on one of the islands.

The journey is an awakening. A story of empowerment. A must-read memoir.

QUOTES WE CANNOT LET GO OF

  • ”Like a swell traversing the ocean to crash upon a distant shore, may we push on towards our dreams and realise that we are both the wave and the sea all at once.”

  • ”It’s up to us to stay curious, keep evolving. And let go of what no longer serves us.”

  • ”Every soul is undergoing its own unique journey and its own pace.”

  • ”With plenty of hard work, choosing love will never lead to lack. It takes courage, but once the decision is made, doors open that seemed forever shut.”

  • ”I often sit up on deck, enjoying the breeze on my tits, and wishing every woman could revel in the same delicious feeling.”

  • ”They are fearless, confident women who want the best for others, and consider themselves part of a great unlimited sisterhood. They are honest and direct and too busy bettering themselves to gossip.

They feel more, think less, and are not afraid to seek their own truth - and manifest big dreams. They know their power and use it wisely.”

WHY READ IT?
A collection of fun and playfully-written poems, from the perspective of two children Lucy and Sam. Follow them on their journey, in poetry form, as they go on a camping adventure with their Grandpa!

We promise - short, sweet, and will leave a smile hanging off your face by the end of it. If you’ve never wanted to try camping, this might change your mind!

PS: We love the illustrations by Matthew Cordell that accompany each poem.

IT’S ALL IN THE MIND
THE IMPOSSIBLE FIRST:
FROM FIRE TO ICE - CROSSING ANTARCTICA ALONE
BY colin o’brady

WHY READ IT?
We first heard about Colin O’Brady in 2020 when he featured on the Joe Rogan Experience (listen to the podcast here, it’s worth a listen), and was intrigued enough to pick up his first book The Impossible First.

Overcoming adversity should be his middle name - he went from being told he would be unable to walk again, to being the first man to cross the continent of Antarctica (!!!) unassisted.

How apt in a time of self and social isolation, because O’Brady’s journey was the epitome of that. What it must have been like to have skied solo across 932 miles of Antarctica in 54 days. A lesson in how the human mind is POWERFUL and HIGHLY ADAPTABLE.

While O’Brady has received an onslaught of criticism regarding the supposed exaggeration of his journey and achievements, what he went through was undoubtedly, no mean feat.
